Hatsuhinode
About the photo
Hatsuhinode is a Japanese tradition that celebrates the first sunrise of the new year. On the morning of January 1st, people across Japan gather at scenic spots, such as mountains, beaches, and shrines, to witness this special moment. Some stay up all night, while others start their journey before dawn to ensure they don’t miss it.
Observing this sunrise holds deep cultural and spiritual significance, symbolising renewal, hope, and gratitude. As the sun rises, it’s a chance to silently reflect on the past year, and offer prayers for health, happiness, and success in the coming year.
This photograph was taken on 1 January, 2024, from the summit of Mount Kenashi, just as the sunrise of the new year bathed Mount Fuji in new light.
About the print
This premium print is a gorgeous blend of glossy and matte, printed on high-quality paper sourced directly from Japan. It’s fingerprint resistant, so no smudges (but still be careful handling the prints!) The print does not come framed.
Sizes and framing
I've chosen print sizes that align best with frames that are easily available. Here’s a quick overview:
8×10 (approx. 20cm x 25cm): A widely available and popular frame size.
12×16 (approx. 30cm x 40cm): Another standard size, closely resembling A3 dimensions (30cm × 42cm).
12×18 (approx 30cm × 46cm): A more unique, elongated size that exudes elegance — ideal for a statement piece.
16×20 (approx. 40cm x 50cm): A classic size with plenty of online frame options.
18×24 (approx. 46cm × 61cm): A larger size for maximum impact. While frames for this size may be pricier, the result is breathtaking and well worth the investment.
Shipping
I’m not a fan of shipping either, so I’ve made it as low as possible. Just ¥500 for worldwide shipping, no matter where you live or how many prints you get!
